Ladies playing hockey in 1890. The woman in white is Lady Isobel Stanley, daughter of Lord Frederick Stanley, of Stanley Cup fame. Lady Isobel was a driving force behind the popularization of ice hockey as a sport, in addition to being a significant influence on her father in the creation and presentation of the Stanley Cup. In short, ladies have been playing ice hockey since the beginning of the sport, and a woman helped to bring the sport to the popularity it enjoys today. The gents should remember that next time they look at me funny when I say my daughter wants to play ice hockey.
